I Saw That Little Baby

I saw that little baby; she was only six months old.
I hoped that she felt loved. I hoped she wasn’t cold.

I saw that little baby whom they tried to abort.
As she struggled to breathe, I saw her face contort.

I rocked her as she slowly died.
I heard her as she cried and cried.
I see now how the people lied, so I have taken the pro-life side.

Her little fingers were curled around mine.
I wept as I waited for the sign.
And finally it came: the monitor beeped and
Made a straight line.

The doctors were very guilty, but that little girl was not.
As I watched her last moments, my heart tied in a knot.

I know that she had feelings, no matter what they say.
At least she’s now in heaven. I’ll see her there someday.
God loves those little babies, for them He gave His Son.
All humans are important, every single one.

This poem was written in 1999 by 12-year-old Melody Stence, inspired by an article she read about a baby who survived an attempted abortion. The poem is not an attempt to re-tell the story. For the story which inspired the poem, see Mona Charen’s story on Baby Hope.
