My name is Sheila Schmidt, and I am a physician near Houston, Texas and also a single mother of two small children. I was 'dumped' on both of my pregnancies for refusing to have an abortion, and I subsequently have written a book entitled "Pregnant and Blown Off (When Abortion is Not an Option)", which was released Sept. 2001 by Publish America publishing.

"Pregnant and Blown Off (When Abortion is not an Option)" is a book for single pregnant women and single mothers of small children. It deals with issues concerning women who become pregnant and then get dumped because they refuse to have an abortion, and it also covers single motherhood from birth to the preschool years. It offers suggestions and tips on how to not only survive the ordeal of being dumped during a pregnancy, but also how to flourish and enjoy the experience of motherhood. It is a congratulatory book for women for having the backbone and moral fortitude to do what they know is right in their heart. It reminds these women of the extraordinary character and inner strength they possess, and offers different ways of thinking about the real life issues that face single pregnant women/single mothers. It is unfortunate that even in the 21st century single motherhood (and certainly single "pregnancyhood") is still viewed by many as some sort of stigma, although in reality the woman is not entirely to blame. Too many men these days are severely lacking in character and maturity and take no responsibility for their actions, thereby leaving a woman with the choice of either having an abortion or doing the entire thing by herself. The emotional trauma of broken dreams and broken hearts can be painful; combine it with a pregnancy and it can be devastating and completely overwhelming.

Therefore, it is very important for women to know that they are not alone, that there are many other women just like them who have gone through the same thing and have done it well. The focus of this book is to move from the mindset of blaming others or society for our lot in life, and to play the hand we are dealt with as much grace and kindness as we can. This book reminds us that as single mothers we have all of the same rights and privileges as our married counterparts, and so do our children. This book also offers practical advice for the single mother from pregnancy through preschool, and constantly reminds us that children are our most precious gift from God. "Pregnant and Blown Off (When Abortion is not an Option)" is intended to be an inspirational source for single pregnant women/single mothers who are facing the hardest, most rewarding and most important challenge of their lives: raising innocent children to be moral and ethical members of society.
