The US government says that you don't have authority over your 14 year old daughter when it comes to deciding whether or not to have the surgical procedure known as abortion. And your representatives in Washington are not eager to even let you know if she has had one. Read on.
| Congress: House Committee Considers Child Custody Protection Act WASHINGTON -- A Congressional committee last week considered the Child Custody Protection Act, a pro-life measure that would prohibit someone other than a parent taking a minor girl across state lines for an abortion in violation of a state's parental notification or consent laws. Eileen Roberts, of Fredericksburg, Va., was in favor of the bill. She said she didn't realize her 14-year-old daughter had had an abortion until she needed hospitalization for depression and $27,000 in follow-up medical treatment. ``I am here today to ask this committee to reject the eccentric notion that any adult stranger has the right to abduct our minor-aged daughters and take them to another state for a secret abortion,'' said Mrs. Roberts. She said an adult friend drove the girl 45 miles away from home for the abortion. Virginia requires that parents be notified when minors seek abortions. Pro-life Rep. Charles Canady, R-Fla., the panel's chairman, said the proposal's purpose is to uphold parental involvement laws in effect in more than 30 states. Supporters also say it would protect vulnerable girls from being spirited away by the self-serving, older men who get them pregnant. The bill died in the Senate last year after passing the House by less than the margin required to overturn a threatened White House veto. Canady said it was appropriate for Congress, with its powers to regulate interstate commerce, to pass such legislation. ``The safety of young girls and the rights of parents demand no less,'' he said. But pro-abortion Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif. led the fight for pro-abortion groups that are adamantly opposed to this sensible legislation.
