New York City. Instead of being an elective, abortion will now be something that obstetrics and gynecology residents in New York City’s public hospitals are required to learn unless they claim moral or religious exemptions. Because of the shrinking number of abortion practitioners in the U.S., Mayor Mike Bloomberg has elected to shore up the number with this program, which was initiated by the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. Kelli Conlin, NARAL Executive Director in the City, points out that this will help the pro-abortion movement nationwide, given that "one in seven doctors is trained in New York City."

Mayor Bloomberg is quoted as saying, "You do not want to have second-rate medicine ever practiced. These are procedures that are allowed by law and we’re going to make sure that the doctors are trained appropriately." Regardless of the opinion of the doctors-in-training. Note that we’ve gone from having abortion training as an elective to having it be mandatory. That's progress in the USA!
